Napoleon has been good so far and no serious trouble or incidents took place. The algea grew on the leaves and around the jar so i tried throwing out all the water and replasing it with tap water without adding any chemicals or water conditioner,a, nd wiping the sides clean with a clean damp cloth. When i put Napleon back in his home he didnt stress any more than he usually done during the waater changes. I changed his diet from the tubiflex to tropical fish flakes,he ate it the same way he ate the tubiflex, but when i tried feeding him the tubiflex again,he didnt eat it or even nibble on it. Because of the clouds, the jar wasnt getting enough sunlight so i placed a mirror next to it so that it can reflect the sunlight onto the leaves.. When i i put the mirror against the jar, Napoleon swam quickly to it and flared out his tail and fins and just floated around it looking aggresive,he would swim away but return shortly after. I'm going to add a small charcoal filter to the tank..we'll see waht happens....

For next years fish project in enviromental sciences i would like the department to consider buying conditioners for the fishes, this is a convinient way to optimise and control fish temperature,Another thing is that there should try to get a substrate suppier that is much cheaper becouse the one that they are using now is quite expensive or use other substances which can substitute the substrate, which can be able to play the role of the substrate.Another thing is that the department must also provide with fish filtres that we can use for our fish tanks, also they can try giving the students more fish food that are different ,a variety of fish foods so that the fish can be able to explore different types of food and see which type is the fish comfortable in eating the most.Lastly the most important thing is that the department must try to supply wider fish tanks so that the fsh can be able to swim more easily and freely becouse there will be more space available for it to occupy.Another last thing is that they can try giving different types of gender fishes, male and female on the same tank or on different tanks depending on which sex the student might want to take of the fish.
DAY 47!
Hi all!
Hope your fishies and plants are doing well:-)
Monday I got X from my partner and I was shocked and amazed to see how much he has grown. His colours were rich and bright and he is indeed bigger than the last time I saw him:-)
I did a leaf count on the plant this evening and found that there are two new stems growing which means that the plant must be healthy and must have definately grown. The leaves are looking good too, I would say 98% green with 2% brown in certain places but there are no dead or dying leaves in the jar. As for the jar, I detect no signs of algae but due to the substrate being fine grained there is a bit of dust on the leaves of the plant. My partner did a water change on Friday last week and inserted the Zeolites into the jar, so the water is and looks very clean. We decided that we are going to make Fridays our water change day.
As for Xs' behaviour, I have noticed a change in his swimming patterns. Before, he was very energetic constantly swimming around in the jar, but now he's bearly moving. I'm not sure whether it's caused by the drop in temperature, due to the change of seasons, or whether he is just too big and lazy to move around. I tried using the mirror to show him his reflecton, with the hopes of getting him to move around but all he does is stare at the mirror, swims to the plant and hides behind the leaves. I'm about to do some research on what the temperature of the water should be. Then I'll take the temperature of the water in the jar compare it to the research and make adjustments to the water by adding some lukewarm water if the temperature is too low. Other than his swimming patterns, his behaviour in the jar has not changed. He still sleeps at the bottom of the jar and lies on or between the leaves. Oh yes, i forgot, he made another bubble nest:-) So I guess his not that lazy.lol...
His feeding diet has changed as his Tubiflex food is finished. My partner and I decided to buy him bloodworms as that was one of the main ingredients in the Tubiflex pellets. I went to the petshop on Saturday and asked one of the owners what food is best too feed a Siamese Fighter fish, he then told me that frozen foods are more preferable than dry foods and that I should try feeding it blood worms. He also told me that I should feed him the bloodworms in moderation as too mush can make the fish unhealthy. So yesterday I started feeding X the bloodworms, well one bloodworm. At first he ignored me when I put the worm in the jar, probably thinking it was the dried food, then I took it out and dipped it back into the jar that had the blood in it (using a tweezer) and tried again. The second time, after I was moving the worm back and forth in the jar, he suddenly came to the surface and grabbed the worm. He then remained at the surface for a few seconds, probably thinking there was going to be more blood worms, then descended to the bottom of the jar. Tonight when I fed him, there was no hesitation at all, he immediately surfaced when he saw my hand about to put the worm in the water. So it seems to me like he's really enjoying the worms:-)
I'm going to do the research now and start my own little investigation to find out why X is bearly moving in the jar. Then I'll blog my research and my results.:-)

KelVin
just fed my fish a minute ago, its so swimming lazy around, don't know if its too full or its got flue !!! but anyway my little ecosystem is doing good, just my plant is worrying me. just loosing leaves slowly, even the one in the bottom are getting red now.I'm thinking of getting another plant, of which this one is affecting my fish, all the dying parts of it. now i have to change water regularly. later peeps
New leak
Since a few weeks ago, I have finally noticed that the fish has grown physically, maybe a few centimeters long but with mild changes on his color texture. What was missing on my last post was the amount of changes of water i make due to the build up of algae/bacteria and other micro organisms. i usually change my water once a week and do it on the weekends. But since it has been relatively cold these days, my procedure has changed to one and a half weeks. This is because there has been no growth of algae/bacteria because of the less frequent UV rays that favor algae growth so conditions have not been favorable of recent which in turn is favoring Nemo and I.
Yesterday i found the fish behaving in a abnormal manner, it was right at the bottom of the tank doing something weird, I could not tell whether it was feeding on the remains of it's food(which is unlikely because he is passive eater and finishes his food the moment i throw it into the jar) or something else. I'll have to keep monitoring his behavior with regards to this piece of the puzzle. When i change the water to clean the tank, i remove 100% of the water to ensure credibility and reliability of fresh clean water for the fish and to kill any possible harmful filth that i may not be able to pick up on which may be sickening to the fish.

Blaze update
Hi all just posting some information about my fish Blaze.
im starting to notice that his color is starting to become much more red than when i got him.His tail is a double tail which means he isn't as aggressive as the fish with a crown tail.Ive done the mirror test as well,he doesn't go into attack mode and starts to swim in a hurry but i can see how he flares out his fins a bit.The same results occurred when i placed a red object in front of the jar.I also noticed that blaze started to create bubble nests on the surface of the water which is quite interesting. As for the new betta food i bought him he really seems to enjoy it as he swims up to eat it in a rush.On the 27th of April i placed the ziolite stones in the jar and will wait for the results in the next few weeks.
My plant on the other is still doing good,it grows big green leaves but at the same time losses a few as they turn yellow and bend downwards.im going to start breaking off the dead leaves as the leaves collect most of the algae and maybe by removing them less algae will collect there. As for the cleaning of the jar the algae is building up again and must be cleaned for the 5th time this coming weekend. The image i posted shows how the leaves are growing but there a few yellows that are dying.
